MILLEDGEVILLE, GA — The body of a missing boater has been recovered from Georgia’s Lake Sinclair after several days of searching, authorities said. The case centered on 76-year-old George Williams of Milledgeville, whose disappearance prompted a multi-agency effort on the water and below the surface.
Officials said the search included sonar technology and underwater robotic equipment as crews tried to locate him. Investigators have not yet said exactly what happened, but they believe Williams may have experienced a medical emergency or fallen into the water accidentally.
The Baldwin County Public Safety Dive Team said its members worked alongside personnel from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Putnam County Fire Rescue and Baldwin County Fire Rescue. Together, they focused on areas of Lake Sinclair that were difficult to search by conventional means.
Sonar and robotic equipment can help responders inspect water where visibility is limited and where a person or object may be hard to spot from the surface. In this case, those tools were part of the effort to find Williams after he went missing on the lake.
The search took a clearer turn Wednesday morning when a boater found Williams’ empty boat tied to a railroad trestle near Haslam’s Marina, Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills said. That discovery gave investigators a specific area to concentrate on as they worked to determine where Williams had gone.
The location of the boat suggested something had happened on the water, but officials have not publicly described the sequence of events leading up to Williams’ disappearance. The empty vessel was one of the key pieces of evidence in the search.
Sills confirmed to CBS News Atlanta that Williams’ body was found Thursday afternoon. The sheriff’s confirmation ended the active search for the missing boater, though the death investigation remains open.
Authorities have not released additional details about the recovery or said whether any other factors may have contributed to Williams’ death. For now, investigators are treating the case as an ongoing inquiry into how the incident unfolded on Lake Sinclair.
At this stage, investigators say Williams may have suffered a medical emergency before ending up in the water, or he may have fallen in accidentally. Those are preliminary possibilities, not a final determination of cause.
Officials have not said whether weather, equipment trouble or any other condition may have played a role. The investigation will likely focus on reconstructing Williams’ movements before his boat was found and determining what led to his death.
In a Facebook post, the Baldwin County Public Safety Dive Team asked people to keep Williams’ family, friends and everyone involved in the search in their thoughts and prayers during what it called a difficult time. The message reflected the emotional toll of a recovery effort that stretched over multiple days.
While the search has ended, officials are still working through the details of the case. For Williams’ loved ones, the recovery brings painful confirmation after days of uncertainty, and for investigators it leaves the central question of how he entered the water still unanswered.
