Police investigate a fatal shooting scene on Florida Avenue in New Orleans early Monday morning

One Person Is Killed in Early Morning Desire Neighborhood Shooting as New Orleans Police Investigate Florida Avenue Scene

NEW ORLEANS, LA — New Orleans police are investigating a fatal shooting in the Desire neighborhood after officers found a man dead on Florida Avenue early Monday morning.

Police said the shooting happened in the 2900 block of Florida Avenue around 4:40 a.m. Officers responding to the call found the victim on the road with gunshot wounds.

New Orleans EMS pronounced the man dead at the scene. Investigators remained at the location Monday morning gathering evidence and working to identify possible suspects.

Police responded shortly before dawn on Florida Avenue

The call came in during the pre-dawn hours, when officers were sent to the 2900 block of Florida Avenue in New Orleans’ Desire area. Sgt. Barry Fletcher, a New Orleans Police Department spokesperson, said the first officers on scene found a male victim lying in the street.

The victim had been shot and was already down when police arrived. Emergency medical personnel later confirmed the death at the scene, turning the investigation into a homicide case for detectives on the ground.

Police have not said how many shots were fired or whether anyone else was injured in the incident.

Investigators began collecting evidence at the scene

As detectives worked the area, they focused on gathering physical evidence that could help reconstruct what happened before the shooting and determine who may have been involved. That kind of early evidence collection often includes canvassing the block, documenting the scene, and looking for witnesses who may have seen people or vehicles leaving the area.

Authorities had not publicly identified any suspect by Monday morning. NOPD also had not released a description of a possible shooter or a motive for the violence.

Police said the investigation was active, but additional details were not immediately available.

The victim had not been publicly identified by Monday morning

Officials described the victim only as a man, and his name had not been released by police Monday morning. That is common in the first hours of a homicide investigation, when detectives are still notifying family members and verifying key details.

New Orleans police did not say whether the man lived nearby or whether the shooting appeared to be targeted. They also did not release an age for the victim.

With no immediate suspect information, investigators were left to piece together the sequence of events from the physical scene and any witness accounts they could obtain.

Desire residents face another violent start to the week

The Desire area has long been among the neighborhoods New Orleans police monitor closely for violent crime. Monday’s shooting added another deadly episode to the city’s continuing public safety concerns, even as officials had not tied this case to any broader pattern.

For residents nearby, the killing on Florida Avenue happened before sunrise, in a stretch of the morning when many people are just beginning their day. Police presence in the block was still active as investigators processed the scene.

Authorities did not immediately say when they expected to provide more information or whether anyone had been taken into custody.

What New Orleans police have said so far

So far, NOPD has confirmed only a few core facts: a male victim was found shot in the roadway, New Orleans EMS declared him dead at the scene, and detectives were working to identify suspects.

Sgt. Barry Fletcher said the shooting happened around 4:40 a.m. in the 2900 block of Florida Avenue. Police have not disclosed anything further about the circumstances leading up to the gunfire.

As the case develops, investigators are expected to rely on scene evidence and witness interviews to determine what happened in the Desire neighborhood before dawn Monday.
