BATON ROUGE, LA — Southern University lifted a campus lockdown Monday night after a shooting injured one person near a residential part of campus, according to a statement from the school. The incident prompted a rapid law enforcement response and briefly put the campus on alert.
Southern Police were notified of shots fired at 5:35 p.m. in Building 100, the university said. Baton Rouge Police later confirmed that one person was hurt and that the person drove themselves to a nearby urgent care facility.
The school said the situation is believed to have been isolated. The lockdown was lifted at 8:20 p.m. as officers remained on scene and continued investigating.
According to Southern University, the first alert came in shortly after 5:30 p.m. when police were notified of shots fired in Building 100. The location is near a residential area on campus, raising immediate concerns for students, staff and nearby residents.
The university did not release additional details about what happened inside or around the building. It also did not say whether the injured person was a student, employee or visitor.
Baton Rouge Police confirmed that one person was injured in the incident. The person got to an urgent care center on their own, which suggests the injury was not immediately life-threatening, though officials did not provide further medical details.
After the shooting, Southern University placed the campus under lockdown while law enforcement secured the area. That precaution remained in effect until 8:20 p.m., when the university announced it had been lifted.
The nearly three-hour lockdown reflected the urgency of the response and the need to make sure there was no continuing threat. The school said police stayed on scene throughout the evening as they worked through the investigation.
University officials did not describe how classes, dorms or campus operations were affected beyond the lockdown itself. They also did not say whether anyone was restricted to a specific building or whether additional safety measures were ordered during the response.
Southern University said the shooting is believed to have been an isolated incident. That characterization suggests investigators were not treating it as an active threat to the broader campus community once the immediate scene was contained.
Even so, law enforcement remained focused on determining exactly what happened and who was responsible. Officers were still working to identify the shooter after the lockdown was lifted, according to the university.
No arrest or suspect description was announced Monday night. Police also did not release information about a possible motive, how many shots were fired or whether the shooting involved more than one person.
Both Southern Police and Baton Rouge Police were involved in the response, showing that the incident required coordination between campus security and city law enforcement. Baton Rouge Police confirmed the injury, while university officials handled campus messaging.
The joint response is typical when a campus shooting or weapons incident occurs near student housing or other occupied university space. It allows campus officers to secure the area while municipal police assist with the criminal investigation.
Officials did not say whether evidence was recovered or whether surveillance video, witness statements or other investigative leads were being reviewed. Those unanswered questions were still part of the developing investigation Monday night.
For students and employees, the lockdown marked another unsettling evening on campus while police tried to determine the full scope of the shooting. The university has not said whether additional counseling, security patrols or campus-wide notices would follow.
What is clear is that the incident briefly disrupted campus life and triggered a broad precautionary response. The school’s statement emphasized that the threat was believed to be contained, but the search for the person who fired the shots continued after dark.
As of Monday night, officials had not shared a timeline for further updates. The investigation remained active, with police still trying to piece together the circumstances that led to the shooting near Building 100.
