NEW ORLEANS, LA — Two motorcyclists were killed in separate crashes in the New Orleans area over the weekend, according to Louisiana State Police. One rider died Friday evening in Jefferson Parish, and another was killed early Saturday on the Crescent City Connection Bridge.
In both cases, police said they collected toxicology samples as part of the investigation. State police said the crashes involved other vehicles as well, but the riders were the only people killed.
The two wrecks happened hours apart in different parts of the metro area, adding to a grim weekend on local roadways.
State police said the first crash happened shortly before 7 p.m. Friday on U.S. 90 near Homeplace Drive in Jefferson Parish. A 30-year-old man from Marrero was riding a 2006 Suzuki motorcycle eastbound when he struck a westbound Mitsubishi Outlander that was turning left onto Homeplace.
The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. Police did not release his name. They said he was wearing a helmet.
The Mitsubishi carried four passengers in addition to the driver. State police said everyone inside the SUV was wearing seatbelts and suffered minor injuries. Toxicology samples were taken from those involved.
The second fatal crash happened around 1 a.m. Saturday on the Crescent City Connection Bridge. Police said a 50-year-old New Orleans man was riding a 2016 Harley-Davidson westbound when he struck the back of a 2024 Nissan Sentra.
According to Louisiana State Police, the Nissan had come to a stop behind a broken-down vehicle in the left westbound lane when the motorcycle hit it at a high rate of speed. The rider was pronounced dead at the scene.
State police said the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet that was not approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The Nissan driver was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured.
Louisiana State Police said toxicology samples were collected in both crashes, a routine step in serious traffic investigations. Officials did not say whether impairment is believed to have played a role in either collision.
The crashes also highlight the dangers motorcyclists face when traffic changes quickly, whether from turning vehicles on a roadway or stopped traffic in a bridge lane. In both incidents, the motorcycle riders died at the scene while the other drivers were either unhurt or had only minor injuries.
State police have not announced any charges or said whether the investigations remain open. The cases involved roads heavily traveled by drivers entering and leaving New Orleans.
U.S. 90 and the Crescent City Connection are both major routes for commuters in and around the city, which can make collisions especially dangerous when speeds are higher. The Jefferson Parish crash involved a left turn across oncoming traffic, while the bridge wreck happened after a vehicle had stopped in a live lane.
Neither crash was described as a multi-vehicle pileup, but both produced severe consequences for the riders. In one case, the SUV occupants had minor injuries; in the other, the driver of the Nissan was not hurt.
Authorities have not said whether road conditions, visibility or mechanical problems contributed to either crash. The investigations continue under Louisiana State Police.
State police identified the riders only by age and hometown: a 30-year-old Marrero man on the Suzuki and a 50-year-old New Orleans man on the Harley-Davidson. Police also identified the vehicles involved as a 2006 Suzuki motorcycle, a Mitsubishi Outlander, a 2016 Harley-Davidson and a 2024 Nissan Sentra.
The rider in Jefferson Parish wore a helmet, while the rider on the bridge wore a helmet police said was not DOT-approved. Those details, along with the toxicology testing, form part of the factual record investigators are using as they examine what happened.
So far, Louisiana State Police have described each crash as separate and have not connected them beyond the fact that both ended in fatalities over the same weekend.
