INDIANAPOLIS, IN — A man died late Friday afternoon after Indianapolis police say officers heard gunfire and found him critically injured in a vehicle at a retail strip on the city’s northwest side.
Medics and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called just before 5:30 p.m. to 4150 Lafayette Road. The location is a strip mall across the road from the former Lafayette Square Mall, where several businesses operate, including an international grocery store, a furniture store, a paint store, another grocery and two restaurants.
Police later said medics determined the man had died. Officers have not publicly identified him.
IMPD officer Drew Brown said investigators were in the area about an hour after the shooting when they heard shots fired. Moments later, police located the man in the parking lot inside a vehicle.
Brown said the victim was suffering from critical injuries when officers found him. Medical personnel later pronounced him dead at the scene.
The sequence suggests the shooting happened before police arrived in the area, but investigators have not publicly described how the confrontation unfolded or how many people may have been involved.
Brown said investigators believe the shooting was an isolated incident. Even so, police have not said what led to the violence or whether the victim knew the shooter.
The exact circumstances were still unclear as detectives continued gathering information. No one had been detained by Friday evening, according to police.
That leaves investigators working to piece together the timeline, the location of the gunfire and who may have fired the shots. Police have not released any details about a suspect or possible vehicle tied to the case.
Police said the shooting did not damage any businesses or other property in the retail area. That is notable because the scene sits in a busy commercial corridor with multiple stores and restaurants nearby.
The strip mall’s mix of tenants includes food, furniture and paint retailers, along with two restaurants. The area is also close to the former Lafayette Square Mall, a familiar northwest side landmark.
Despite the heavy police presence, Brown said the investigation did not show any impact beyond the loss of life. Authorities have not reported any additional injuries connected to the incident.
Brown said family members were on scene trying to understand what happened. Their presence underscored how quickly the shooting turned a public parking lot into a crime scene and a place of grief.
Police did not say how the family learned of the incident or whether investigators had been able to speak with them by Friday evening. The department continued to treat the case as an active homicide investigation.
For now, detectives are relying on witness accounts, surveillance video and any other available evidence to identify the person responsible and establish a motive.
