There are many steps that you have to take to be a part of the boy’s basketball team. One important step is practicing to work and improve their skills so that they can win their games. We practice almost every single day of the week and it helps us learn new techniques and skills so that we can win our games 7th grader Tre Thomas says. The boys have a set routine of what they do at every practice. They start with Perfection, which is a layup drill, then 2-man and 3-man pass, then 3 on 2, then 2 on 1, and a transition drill.

then Duke passing, which is like a three-man weave except the people on the sides shoot and the person in the middle shoots a layup, and B maze, which is a ball handling drill where they make a move at each cone. Then Osu passed, and finally 4 on 4 shells. All of these different drills and all of these practices that the boys attend help them grow as a team and individually too. If the boys want to win their games and make it to the district or state championship, they have to practice, work hard, and put in tons of effort.

It takes lots of inspiration to stay motivated on and off the court for the boys’s basketball team. They have continued to push themselves through wins and losses. We asked 7th grader Peyton Lawrence about who inspired him to play basketball, and he said, “KKobe Bryant because he was my favorite to watch in the NBA.” Having a player to look up to is very important because they can influence you to be better and keep doing what you love.

The boys also influence each other on and off the court. They work together well and are always helping each other out. Izek Reed, who’s also a 7th grader, said, You gotta be a brotherhood; you can’t be the team by yourself; you need other people to help you out.” Overall, the team is super close to one another, and their bond is a very special one. They work together to win their games and to become a better team.

The basketball team has had many accomplishments on the court. Last season, the 8th-grade team won the district championship, and the 7th-grade team won second. When I play basketball, I just don’t think about anything else except what I’m doing. I just block out all the noise and everyone in the stands and just breathe, 7th grader Jozimar Coleman said. The boys have many different strategies that help them stay focused while playing. One of those is taking deep breaths, blocking everything else out, and focusing on the game. Although the BGJHS basketball team faces many setbacks, they always work super hard to get better than they were before.

All in all, the BG boys basketball team is a great sports program at BGJHS. All the coaches and players work super hard at every practice and game so that they can win. Everything that the boys do at practice helps them become better basketball players and a better team.
