Track and field is one of the oldest sports. In ancient times, it was an event held in conjunction with festivals and sports. The BGJHS after-school track team works to improve their season during practices and training to prepare for competitions.
Track members train and prepare for their race. Track members prepare by doing stretches. 7th grader Sierra Caldwell said, “What we do is we have to talk to each other and the coaches. We work together, and we run, and we prepare by hurdlers, sprinting long distances, and more.” This shows that the team works hard; training and preparation help them get ready for their future competitions.
The track team uses teamwork to win their competitions. 8th-grade track member Melanie Guillen said, “In practice, I focus more on the event I will be performing in the meet and make sure I have a good time.” They practice at the gym in high school Monday-Thursday and sometimes Saturdays for 2 hours a day. This shows that they are well-prepared for competitions.
The track team meets at the high school most of the time. 7th grader Sierra Caldwell said, “We get in a circle and take a pep talk before we run in groups, and we say, “Okay, are y’all ready?” This shows that meetings are helpful and give the members confidence. Meetings could leave them to victory once they start.
Track team practice seasons to help members prepare for upcoming competitions. Track Team Coach Ms. Flemester stated, “We start conditioning in late November and early December. We have an indoor season that usually runs from January to February, with indoor state happening in early March, and then that transitions into outdoor season. Outdoor season starts around mid-March, and we have multiple track meets.”
Track is a fun sport; it helps motivate people’s minds and helps them feel confident in themselves.
