FRANKLIN COUNTY, GA — A Friday afternoon crash in Franklin County left one man dead and three other people seriously injured, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
Troopers said the three-car wreck happened on GA 59 near Darrowby Lane at about 4:37 p.m. Investigators believe a Honda SUV heading north crossed into the southbound lane while going through a curve and struck a Toyota SUV head-on.
After the first impact, both vehicles rotated. GSP said a southbound truck then hit the driver’s side of the Toyota.
The driver of the Toyota was pronounced dead at the scene. Georgia State Patrol identified him as 67-year-old Frankie William Roper.
Authorities said the other two people riding in the Toyota were taken for medical treatment because of serious injuries. No names have been released for those passengers.
The crash brought a deadly end to what began as a routine drive on a rural highway east of Lavonia. Troopers did not say whether anyone else was hurt in the initial collision beyond the occupants of the Toyota and the Honda driver.
GSP said the Honda driver was also seriously hurt and was taken for treatment. Troopers said charges are pending.
Investigators suspect the driver may have been distracted by a cell phone at the time of the crash. The patrol has not said whether that suspected distraction has been confirmed or what specific charges could be filed.
Traffic crashes tied to driver inattention can unfold quickly, especially on curves and two-lane roads where a vehicle can cross into oncoming traffic with little warning.
The truck involved in the crash sustained a secondary impact after the head-on collision, but the people inside were not hurt, according to troopers.
That detail suggests the most serious damage was concentrated in the first two impacts, when the Honda and Toyota met head-on and then the Toyota was struck again on the driver’s side.
Georgia State Patrol has not released information about the truck driver or the truck passengers beyond saying they were uninjured.
The crash happened on a busy stretch of GA 59 in Franklin County, where curves and opposing lanes can increase the risk of severe wrecks when a driver loses focus.
While troopers have not released a full reconstruction, their preliminary account points to a sequence that turned violent in seconds: one vehicle drifted across the center line, two vehicles collided, and a third car became involved moments later.
GSP said the investigation remains active, and no additional details were immediately available.
As of now, troopers have confirmed the time, location, and vehicle sequence involved in the crash, along with the identity of the man who died. They have also said the Honda driver was seriously injured and that charges are pending.
No other information has been released about the passengers, possible citations, or whether any witnesses were interviewed at the scene. The Georgia State Patrol has not said when the investigation may be completed.
For now, the crash remains a tragic reminder of how quickly a moment of inattention can lead to deadly consequences on the road.
