Did you know that archery is one of the oldest sports in the world? The archery team at BGJHS has been on a winning streak this season, and they just keep improving!
In archery, practice makes perfect. Archers must practice holding their bow and arrows straight to shoot, which requires a lot of strength. 8th grader Trista Dewey said, “I have been practicing a lot for the shoot; I had been practicing every week; I was going to all the practices. I had also been practicing at home for about 2 hours each. I was also practicing on the weekends more than the regular school week. I also try to work a lot more for every shoot we have.” The archery team practices 3 days a week at The Learning Academy to prepare for meets on the weekends.
Archers feel nervous because they have so much pressure on them at the archery meets. 6th grader Haisley Smith said, “I was nervous and also a little surprised. I was more nervous than surprised. We were all nervous, but once it started, we weren’t as nervous. Whenever it was over, we were all shocked the next day that we had won first; we never thought we would win first in our first competition.” These feelings can arise at any time when archers are competing in bullseye or 3D events.
After all their hard work, archers should feel proud of themselves. 7th grader Lillian Toomey shared, “I felt good about us winning. We thought at the beginning that we weren’t actually going to win but we also had a little feeling that we would win. After we won, we had more confidence for the next shoot. We felt that we had accomplished so much more than we should have.” The BGJHS Archery team have won the Bristow Bullseye in November and the Drakes Creek Gator Fun Shoot.
