Middle school percussion at BGJHS drums to their beat and gives everyone the performance of their life on November 14, 2024.
Many percussionists practice differently with different instruments and techniques. For some, like 7th grader Calvin Reed, it’s just simply practicing in his free time, but for others, like Jericho Suzumu, it’s more like practicing at home and tapping his pencil on the table quietly in class to practice rhythm.
All of the percussionists have also had to practice on different instruments like timpani, xylophones, and cymbals. These also need different strategies that can be extremely intricate and specific or simple and easy. As stated by Calvin, “The upcoming concert hasn’t only been practice for the percussionist; it’s also been about anxiety mixed with excitement for many. I’m sure all of us have been stressed about something at some point, whether it’s homework or a recital, and for some of these percussionists, stress has been detrimental.”
One of the 7th-grade percussionists, Calvin, even stated, “I’m stressed about multitasking and beginning transition.” Which shows just how important this concert is to them. All of the percussionists have also had to practice on different instruments like timpani, xylophones, and cymbals. All of these also need different strategies that can either be extremely intricate and specific or simple and easy. As Calvin stated, “For me, it is the keyboards and xylophone.”
