POWDER SPRINGS, GA — Police are investigating after a man was found shot to death outside a Powder Springs home late Friday night. Officers with the Powder Springs Police Department responded to the 3000 block of Mustang Drive shortly before 9 p.m. and found the man wounded at the scene.
Authorities said he died there. Detectives from the Cobb County Police Department were called in to lead the case, which remains active and ongoing. Officials also said there is no perceived threat or active danger to nearby residents.
Residents on Mustang Drive said the shooting came as a shock in a neighborhood they described as calm and family-oriented. One neighbor, Georgia Garcia, told FOX 5’s Hernan Gutierrez that she was celebrating her daughter’s birthday when she heard loud noises she first thought were fireworks.
Garcia said she and others went outside and saw the body near an SUV before calling 911. She said the scene was especially upsetting because young children, including her 2-year-old grandson, regularly play outside in the area.
She said the incident left her shaken and changed how safe the neighborhood feels to her now, even though she had considered it a secure place before Friday night.
Other longtime residents said they had trouble believing that a deadly shooting had happened on their street. Fayelle Ward, who lives down the road, said she did not know about the death until hours later.
Ward said Mustang Drive has generally felt peaceful and that she had never felt unsafe there. She called the shooting shocking and said it was hard to accept because so little serious crime appears to happen in the neighborhood.
That reaction matched the broader mood among neighbors who said violent crime is rare in the area and that the incident has left many people rattled.
Police have not publicly identified the victim, and they have not released his age while they wait to notify next of kin. Investigators also have not named any suspects or announced an arrest.
Officials have not said what led up to the gunfire. They also have not disclosed whether the shooting happened inside the home or outside it, leaving several key parts of the timeline unclear as detectives continue their work.
The case remains under active investigation, and authorities have not said how many people may have been involved.
Powder Springs officers were the first to respond, but Cobb County detectives are now handling the primary investigation. That shift is common in major cases and gives county investigators a closer look at the evidence, scene, and possible witnesses.
Officials have not said whether forensic testing or additional interviews are underway, but the case remains open. Police have emphasized that there is no known danger to the public, even as the investigation continues in the residential area.
Neighbors who spoke after the shooting said that reassurance matters, but many still want answers about what happened on Mustang Drive.
Investigators are asking anyone who may know something about the shooting to contact the Cobb County Police Department at 770-499-3945. Police have not said whether they are looking for a specific vehicle, witness account, or other evidence tied to the case.
For now, the incident has become a troubling exception in a neighborhood residents described as quiet and safe. While officials say there is no ongoing threat, the shooting has left many people on Mustang Drive unsettled and waiting for answers.
Detectives have not provided a timetable for additional updates.
