Preparing for the Black Male Scholars Future Success Together, we are not only building a brighter future for ourselves but also inspiring others to follow in our footsteps and make a positive impact in our community.
This program, Black Male Scholars, is designed for young men in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. It focuses on education and social-emotional excellence.
The Black Male Scholars is a program for young black men at BGJHS. The Black Male Scholars program aims to help young black boys become leaders or better leaders at home, community, and school. “The Black Male Scholars is a program for black kids to get a better education because most black men don’t graduate college,” said 8th grader Kyson Turner
The BMS experience in the program is “very fun and interesting,” said 8th grader Jordan Hill. Hill shared that he finds assignments the scholars work on to be interesting, such as working on graphing and essay writing. Many assignments they work on are book-related, where the scholars can even create different endings.
There are many aspects of BMS that the students enjoy. 8th grader Casen Edison said, “The Black Male Scholars are all very good people to be around and very funny.” Edison explained that the scholars help each other when they need help. When a scholar is down, another scholar tries to lighten the mood.
Every month, the BMS takes a field trip together. They went to the Louisville Kentucky Zoo on September 20th. 8th grade Black Male Scholar Kyson Turner said, “I had a fun experience there and I enjoyed being around the Black Male Scholars.” 8th grader Jordan Hill said, “I enjoy the BMS field trips and the opportunities that we get that other students don’t get.”
By embracing our unique strengths and talents, we can pave the way for future generations of Black Male Scholars to shine in every aspect of life.
