From classroom to championship, our eSports team is redefining what it means to be a student-athlete! As traditional sports face new challenges, eSports is significantly increasing unique opportunities for players and fans to play competitively.
Here at BGJHS, something new is in the works. Mr. Staggs, the computer science teacher, is starting a new eSports team for students. Esports helps players develop skills such as teamwork, strategic thinking, and communication, as well as potential career paths in the gaming industry.
There are two Esports seasons: one in the fall and one in the spring. The fall season starts in September with tryouts, and competitions typically run through to late fall. The spring season begins after the new year and continues through the end of the school year. Tryouts will be in Mr. Staggs’s room in September. If you don’t make the team, then there will be a spring season that begins after the new year and continues through the end of the school year. So you will still have a chance even if you don’t make the team in the fall.
As we’ve seen, our eSports coach indeed has big goals for the team in its first year, and the team is on its way to accomplishing its goal. Mr. Staggs said, “As a coach, my goal is to grow our eSports teams, not only in terms of skill level but also in teamwork, strategy, and sportsmanship. I want to see our teams, Purple Domain, and Purple Contain, compete at higher levels, ideally reaching state and regional championships.”
For Mr. Staggs, the eSports Club will be challenging for him as a coach. He is trying to develop a strong team culture that fosters collaboration and respect among players. Mr. Staggs started an Esports club this year, and he is curious about the students’ passion for Esports and the motivation behind starting an eSports club this year. Mr. Staggs said, “I love eSports because it brings together students with a shared passion for gaming competitively and collaboratively.”
Sports is a space where students who might not fit into traditional sports find a place to excel and be part of a team. Mr. Staggs explained, “I started the eSports club because I saw how popular and impact gaming could be for students, especially in developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.”
8th grader Bejazid Muskic likes the community and is excited to participate in the competition. Muskic said, “I wanted to join eSports so that I could show what I can do. I want to become a prodigy. I also want to become a big gamer for eSports.”
8th grader Dax Allen wants to join eSports because he wants to have fun there. “The most challenging for me when I join eSports is going to be competition. My future goal in eSports is to just get better at the game and keep progressing over time.”
Esports is very popular and unique. It gives players opportunities to compete competitively. Keep up with the new eSports team this year to check on their progress. This is the Rise of eSports.
