From the heart of our school to the stage—discover how our band is not making music but making memories. The moments that inspire: How our band creates lasting memories beyond the stage. The band at BGJHS is full of students with a variety of instruments. They want to learn to play instruments that they have chosen and perform on a stage with a full audience.
Learning an instrument may seem difficult to some. 8th grader Ermack Ramos said, “No, not quite; it wasn’t hard for me to learn the percussion.” For others, learning an instrument can be tricky. 8th grader Kamree Hunt said, “When I played bass clarinet, I couldn’t blow through the instrument because it needed more air to make a full sound. My first instrument was a clarinet, and the only problem was pressing my fingers down perfectly.”
Band teacher Mrs. Shores plays an instrument and has been playing for a long time. Mrs. Shores said, “In the 6th grade, I learned to play the trumpet, and by my 8th grade year, I knew I wanted to become a band director.”
Both Mrs. Shores and her students make so many memories in band class. You can make so many memories with other people around you who are in that band class. Ramos explained, “I’ve made many memories in the percussion class when we would go to the percussion festival.” Mrs. Shores, the band director, says, “Band was my favorite part of the day, and some days were the only reason I cared to come to school. As a teacher, I get to invest in my students the way my band directors invested in me, and while I don’t have a favorite memory in the band as a teacher, some of my favorite moments are when students succeed on their own.”
From a classroom perspective to standing ovations, our school band has shown that when passion and talent unite, the result is more than music. It’s a symphony of unforgettable moments and lifelong friendships.
