For many 15-year-olds, the sweet taste of freedom comes with a plastic card and a whole lot of responsibility. Kentucky created an opportunity for 15-year-olds to be able to get their licensing permit. On March 25, 2025, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear signed a new law allowing 15-year-olds to apply for a learner’s permit
Kentucky created a new law in which 15-year-olds can apply for a learner’s permit. Although 15-year-olds with permits can’t drive unsupervised until they are 16 to ensure safety and make sure they can drive responsibly, they must still pass a written knowledge test, a vision test, and fulfill driving requirements to officially gain a bit of freedom behind the wheel. Many may argue that the permit is a good or bad idea. For instance, 7th Grader Nailah Bennett said, ¨I think it’s a good idea because it lets us get experience at a younger age.¨ This represents one perspective among many as the community debates the impact of this new law.
With this new law, parents are worried and scared for their kids’ safety. Now parents have to get their kids prepared for their new permit to make sure they pass their tests. Parents worried that some 15-year-olds might not be mature enough for this new law and are going to make a lot of mistakes. Mrs.Cook shares that she is scared to death. She says, “ I have two older daughters; they are now 20 years old, and teaching them how to drive was very stressful. One of my daughters was at task the first time, and when she got her license, she had three fender benders in the first month of driving after getting her license. To see some parents are very scared and don’t trust their kids with a permit, but some parents are very happy for their kids to take charge of a new responsibility and the independence they will get.
Some kids want an opportunity to be free, and by having this permit, they can feel like they have more freedom and more opportunities to learn how to drive and prove that they are responsible. For example, Garrett Pearson said, “I’m not scared because I’m pretty prepared, and when I do get the permit, I’m going to go pick up a friend, take them out to eat, and just drive around This shows that some kids are very excited about this new law, and they can’t wait until they get more freedom, take on this new responsibility, and have a chance to experience something new.
Getting your licensing permit at the young age of 5 has many advantages and disadvantages. For example, aceable.com explains that ¨driving can be highly dangerous for young drivers,¨ which may be true, but aceable.com also explains that there are some advantages: ¨After passing their driver’s license test, teens get the freedom to do things they haven’t done before,¨ which for many teens is a great thing to gain experience and responsibility.
Overall, everybody has different opinions about the new driving permit law. Some may think it provides worthy opportunities for teenagers with this law, and some may think it’s a dangerous and unnecessary law that should never have been signed. Although it may be a complicated decision, each teenager needs parental guidance so that it will be fair for both sides.
