Do you ever wonder what goes into creating a theatrical production?
Mr. Quinn, the theatre director at BGJHS, has started a class using his years of theatre experience.
Theater arts gives students an idea of what it’s like to plan a theater production through the projects they complete. Mckinley Wight explained, “We like to write scenes like make characters, costumes, stuff like that.”
Mr. Quinn has been producing shows here at BGJHS for a while. He has never had a class focused on what it’s like to create a show. Mr. Quinn explained why he decided to start this class: “I was in theatre all the way through high school, and I really enjoyed it. I did some theatre and choir in college, and I help with the theatre program here, and I thought it’d be neat and kids would enjoy it.”
Along with students, teachers also want to accomplish something when they arrive at school. For Mr. Quinn, “Just get more kids involved in the arts; show people there’s other options besides just being an actor, a singer, or a dancer. There’s other technical stuff, and just show them some interesting things to do.”
With a new class, some students have used this opportunity to improve their skills for upcoming musicals and plays. 7th grader Katherine Apple stated, “Cause it would improve my acting skills and help and benefit my chances of getting into the musical or the fall play… this will benefit my chances of getting in a lead role in plays and musicals.”
Student perspective is very important for determining the success of a class Mckinley Wright shared her experience of the class: “Theater class is really fun and I met a lot of fun people in there and I get to do work with my friends.”
Students have the option to choose the classes they would like to take for their next school year. Mckinley Wright remarked, “I chose theatre because I was like in the musical and the play last year. Then I thought it was really fun to like do all that stuff. So then I just wanted to try the theatre class.”
