“Mathematics was not only a tool for scientific investigation but also an art form in its own right.” Albert Einstein |
In 2024, on December 2nd, the BGJHS math teachers are preparing their students for the math I Ready diagnostic.
Math has made a change in a variety of students’ lives and has helped diversely. 6th grader Aliyah White mentioned, “Math has affected my life because it has taught me how to calculate the mean in science and being able to use division outside of school.”
Many students have faced different challenges in math class. King Bonds said, “I don’t face many challenges, but the big challenge I face the most is getting the vocabulary words mixed up with each other. The reason why getting the vocabulary words mixed up is a big challenge for me is that when I have a test and I have to match the vocabulary word with the definition, it can make a change on my grade for the class.”
A variety of students have different connotations about math. 7th grader Palmer Kay stated, “My experience in math is great because I have a great math teacher and I’m taking high school math, which allows me to be with other people in different grades.”
A lot of students enjoy numerous things about math, Ella laton states,I enjoy math because the teacher is indeed fun and she makes learning fun, Mrs. Searcy makes math fun because she allows us to play games that allow us to learn and be able to have fun.” Ian Bishop said, “I enjoy the math teacher the most because when you have a great teacher, it allows you to be more interested and learn more with your friends.”
Numerous teachers have had different experiences and thoughts about how math is different from teaching other classes. 6/7th grade teacher Mrs. Scott mentioned, “Teaching math is unique because once we learn a new skill, it’s sometimes not seen again until the next grade, whereas many content areas build one specific skill throughout the entire school year.’’
The majority of math teachers have different challenges that they face in teaching math. 6/7 grade teacher Mrs. Scott said, “For example, 7th grade students have an entire unit dedicated to angels, but the last time angels were ever taught to them was in the 4th grade, and what makes it difficult is they could forget the things they did years ago.”
Math is an excellent way for students to embrace their unique talents and strengths or to analyze their critical thinking or reasoning skills.
