Hurricane Helene’s death roll tops 200 or more. There have been at least 213 deaths in six states as a result of the storm.
Due to the storm, people have lost their houses, family members, pets, etc. We reached out to Ellie Wigodsky; she lives in Asheville, NC. In her own words, she explains how Hurricane Helene affected her. “The rain started on Wednesday (9/25) afternoon. I knew we were expecting a lot of rain on Thursday and would be potentially impacted by strong winds from the Hurricane from Thursday night through Friday morning. So on Wednesday night, I tried to go to the grocery store to get some provisions for the next few days. A huge tree had already fallen across the road in my neighborhood and I couldn’t get out.”
She also explains how the bad storm canceled all her trips and concerts. After the storm, she went to her parents’ house in Winston-Salem, NC. Ellie spent two weeks covering work for all of her co-workers who were impacted by the storm. Hurricane Helene impacted NC for sure! But Hurricane Helene affected Florida.
Laura Richman, Mr Quinn’s sister, was also affected in Tempa Terrace, Florida. Laura Richman explains, “ We did not have electricity for 6 days so adjusting to a new routine at home was a challenge. Finding gas for our generator was challenging because the gas lines were taking hours. It took 3 hours one morning to get gas in our car and portable gas tanks.” “We sustained some damage to our fence and had large amounts of yard debris and branches to clean up. We have several friends that ended up with trees on their houses or water that invaded their homes.”
Many trees have fallen due to how bad the storm was. Some roads are still closed to this day because of how bad the storm was. With the revision of the count in Buncombe County, the statewide death toll from Helene in North Carolina now stands at 96, officials said. More than 20 people remain missing. More than 200 people across at least six states were killed as Helene moved through the Southeast, dumping heavy rain that devastated the mountainous regions of western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee.
