The band practices 5 days a week for upcoming concerts so they can do something they love every day. A student’s decision to join the school band can be influenced by various factors. Many students are influenced to join a band because of their passion for music and their friends.
7th grade band member Angela Gunter took band because she thought it would be very fun. She wanted to learn something new. “Band is where I can express myself in music; playing your instruments can take out your anger by not words but in music,” said Gunter. One big challenge she has in the band is learning a new piece and she messes up. Angela plays the flute. She thought the flute was cool and interesting. She doesn’t have a favorite piece, but she loves it when they do Happy Birthday when it’s people’s birthday.
8th grade band member Amelia Messenger decided to take band several years ago. Her sister, along with most of her other family, influenced her. She decided that it was a great opportunity for her to learn a new skill set and help build a bigger friendly community. “Band is all about cooperation and skill,” said Amelia Messenger.
The teacher’s name is Christi Shores, band director, at BGJHS. All the other leaders in her group are Anjali Sivaainkaran and Lucas Allen. The group meets daily in the band room during the 1st through 5th periods. Their next major event to happen is the 8th-grade night on October 22, 2024. The players to keep an eye on this whole year are all of them! They have 300 students in the band at BGJH. Music has the power to unite us all, and no one exemplifies this better than BGJH’s band.
Many students are influenced to join a band because of their passion for music and their friends. They have a limited amount of time to learn the songs that the band teacher picks out. They all have to prepare for the concerts. Newer band members have to learn how to play their instruments before learning how to play the music pieces, which takes up even more time until the concert.
“Music is probably the one real magic I have encountered in my life. There’s not some trick involved with it. It’s pure and it’s real. It moves, it heals, it communicates and does all these incredible things.” -Tom Petty.
